Nightborne

Horde
Introduction Nightborne
Isolated behind a protective barrier for 10,000 years, the elves of Suramar grew increasingly dependent upon the arcane magic of the Nightwell. To protect this font of power, the leaders of the Nightborne struck a bargain with the Burning Legion that plunged their kingdom into civil war. After fighting for freedom from their demonic masters, the Nightborne seek allies in the Horde to help reclaim their place in the world.
History

The Nightborne were originally a sect of elite Highborne Night Elves living in the grand sorcerous city of Suramar during the War of the Ancients. When Queen Azshara allied with the Burning Legion, Suramar’s local leaders realized the demons would destroy Azeroth. To save themselves, they used the Eye of Aman'Thul to erect an impenetrable, magical shield over the heart of their city. Believing the entire world outside had been completely obliterated, they remained inside this bubble for ten millennia.

Over thousands of years, their complete isolation and intense reliance on their created font of raw arcane energy—the Nightwell—physically transformed them into a slender, dark-skinned, glowing-eyed new race of elves. When the Burning Legion returned to Azeroth during the Legion expansion, their Grand Magistrix surrendered the city to the demons. A violent civil war erupted, and after surface champions helped them overthrow their demonic masters, the Nightborne found political empathy and shared magical addiction histories with the Blood Elves, leading them to officially join the Horde.

Starting Zone: The Nighthold Estate
Isolated behind a protective barrier for 10,000 years, the elves of Suramar grew increasingly dependent upon the arcane magic of the Nightwell. Having broken free from their demonic masters and reclaimed their freedom, these proud, noble elves now seek to find their footing in a vastly changed world, throwing their lot in with the Horde to secure their future.
Home City: Suramar City

Suramar, the crown jewel of the ancient Kaldorei Empire, stands as an unparalleled architectural marvel of sweeping marble bridges, soaring spires, and floating arcane lanterns. Shrouded in a perpetual, magical twilight, its grand canals and bustling star-lit plazas have remained preserved for millennia, masking a proud society that blends immense magical wealth with absolute elegance.

Suramar City is one of the largest, most visually detailed urban environments in all of World of Warcraft. As a playable faction hub, players have access to the Shal'Aran conduit sanctuaries, royal portal chambers connecting directly to Orgrimmar, and the lower canals where vendors trade fine wines, ancient arcana, and specialized Manasaber racial mounts.

Leader: First Arcanist Thalyssra

Nightborne society functions as a merit-based magocracy, where political standing is directly tied to a citizen's absolute mastery of arcane sorcery and historical lineage:

  • First Arcanist Thalyssra: The current, undisputed ruler of the Nightborne. During the demonic occupation of Suramar, she served as a high-ranking advisor who openly rebelled against the crown. Cast out of the city and left to mutate into a withered creature, she successfully organized the Nightfallen resistance. With outside help, she executed a massive counter-coup, liberated her people, and later married Regent Lord Lor'themar Theron of Silvermoon, cementing an unbreakable bond between the Nightborne and the Blood Elves.
  • Grand Magistrix Elisande (Former Ruler): The legendary sorceress who originally raised the magical shield to save Suramar 10,000 years ago. While a fiercely protective leader, her reliance on temporal magic convinced her that fighting the Burning Legion in the modern era had a 0% success rate. To ensure her city's survival, she chose to collaborate with the demons, ultimately forcing her people into a tragic civil war that resulted in her execution.
  • Chief Telemancer Oculeth: A brilliant, eccentric master of spatial magic who manages the entire transit infrastructure of the Nightborne. Oculeth provides the technical genius behind the Horde's tactical warp portals, acting as a key advisor to Thalyssra
