This small, cone-shaped object is a nanobot recompiler - a funneling device of sorts for nanites, taking them from their programmed state and placing them into a more tangible, usable form. Unfortunately, recompilers are worthless without a crystal to actually program the nanites in the first place... not to mention the nanites themselves.
