1 egg yolk
1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cloves
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp finely ground black pepper

Cream the sugar and butter until smooth. Stir in egg yolk and molasses. Combine all the dry ingredients and sift into the mixture until smooth. Cover and chill for at least a couple of hours.

Preheat the oven to 350 F (175 C). Roll the dough out and cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Bake for 8-10 minutes and let cool on wire racks.
